POWER SHOES/LOS GRANDES ZAPATOS
CAN YOU WEAR THESE SHOES?
On each of four sides of a room:
One drawing of an altered newspaper image (eight by five feet) of Spanish and Portuguese speaking heads of state who participated in the 1991 conference in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Four pairs "power" shoes, referring to images in drawing, placed at baseboard.
Five pairs worn rubber sandals nailed vertically at each corner.
At center of floor:
Twenty pairs of different "power" shoes arranged on grid, perhaps on sisal mats, enabling the audience to walk in and around, inviting then to contemplate "filling the shoes" with all its implications.
A ten minute tape loop, utilizing a wide variety of voices (female, male, child) and line readings in English and Spanish; creating differnt meanings. e.g.
"Fill the shoes...step into these shoes...squelch...stomp...step...kick...shoe time...give them the boot...boot them out...soft shoe...white shoe...change your shoes...why should I change my shoes?..shoe time...shoo..."
Space and/or site of proposed project:
A room or hall approximately 600 square feet. Ideally, project could be entered through a short corridor. The scale of drawings to shoes is important. Overall size of project has flexibility and depends on specific space.
